The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were officially unveiled during a press event at the Flint Center for Performing Arts in Cupertino, California on September 9, 2014, and released on September 19, 2014; pre-orders began on September 12, 2014, with the iPhone 6 starting at US$649 and the iPhone 6 Plus starting at US$749. In China, where the iPhone 5C and 5S were the first models in the iPhone series to be released in the country on the same day as their international launch, Apple notified local wireless carriers it would be unable to release the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on the 19th there were "details which are not ready"; local media reported the devices had not yet been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and earlier in the year, a news report by state broadcaster China Central Television alleged iPhone devices were a threat to national security because iOS 7's "frequent locations" function could expose "state secrets."
Some users reported the 64 and 128 GB iPhone 6 models had experienced performance issues, and that some 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus models would, in rare cases, randomly crash and reboot. Business Korea reported the issues were connected to the triple-level cell NAND storage of the affected models. Triple-level NAND flash can store three bits of data per cell of flash, and are cheaper than dual-level cell solutions, but at the cost of performance. It was reported Apple had planned to switch the affected model lines back to multi-level cell flash, and address the performance issues on existing devices in a future iOS update.

Note that there was a problem with the batteries in the iPhone 6 and 6s models with Apple criticised for slowing down older phones to prevent shutdowns and maximise battery life. There was a program in place whereby Apple would replace the batteries but that is now finished (Apple ran a free replacement program from 2016 to the end of 2017 and a paid for program until the end of 2018). Read more about the battery problems here.
If you travel a lot, consider getting an unlocked iPhone 6S! This will work on almost any service carrier, no matter where you go in the world. And even though newer iPhones have slightly better rear-facing cameras with a higher megapixel count and better low-light photography performance, the iSight camera that comes on the iPhone 6S is still plenty sharp. And if you're a fan of video chatting, this phone has the same great industry-leading FaceTime app as the latest iPhones!
Today there are more ways than ever to buy an iPhone. There's the old two-year contract, though those are getting phased out more and more all the time (thanks to T-Mobile's recent disruption of the US wireless industry). Then there are installment plans, where you pay the totals you see above over (usually) 24 months. And of course you can also just shell out these full amounts outright.
Apple is also now offering its own unique iPhone Upgrade Program, where you pay a monthly fee (starting at US$32.41 per month for the 16 GB iPhone 6s) and will always have the latest iPhone. When Apple releases new models next year, you just trade in your 6s or 6s Plus and continue to pay the same fee for the newer model (and so on).
Apple debuted the iPhone 6 last week, and this time around, the standard flagship model is joined by a beefed-up brother, the iPhone 6 Plus. Latching on to the growing phablet trend, the Plus stretches to 5.5" in size, whereas the standard iPhone 6 checks in at 4.7". Apple also supercharged the Plus with a higher-resolution screen and optical image stabilization, among other things.
Thus, we were curious to know just how many people are actually interested in the pricier model. We asked 1,807 of our readers if they would buy a newly-announced iPhone, and if so, which one. As it turns out, despite the additional cost, more shoppers were interested in buying the Plus; 34.3% of respondents claimed they will buy the iPhablet, whereas only 29.6% will purchase the standard iPhone 6. This supports early reports that the Plus actually sold out in preorders (although that fact alone doesn't definitively prove that the Plus is more popular, since Apple might have produced different amounts for each model).
After the size difference, the next major difference one is most likely to notice between the smaller iPhone SE and the larger iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models is that the smaller model has flat sides with a "chamfered cut" band around the edges of the sides, whereas the larger models have softly rounded sides. EveryiPhone.com prefers the iPhone SE design with flat sides as it is easier to grip, but others prefer the sleeker look that the rounded sides of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus provide.
The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus also are made of aerospace-grade 7000 series aluminum, which is more durable and less bendable than the aluminum used in the iPhone SE. In durability tests from SquareTrade, the company found that the iPhone SE bent under 160 pounds (73 kg) of pressure whereas the iPhone 6s bent under 170 pounds (77 kg) of pressure and the iPhone 6s Plus under 180 pounds (82 kg) of pressure. All three have an unadvertised rubber gasket around the display to reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of internal water damage, as well.
All of the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus models support UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz); and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) as well as Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC for Apple Pay. All of these models support 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, but the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have MIMO support whereas the smaller iPhone SE does not.
One major change in the 2022 iPhone 14 lineup? There's no new iPhone Mini. Instead, Apple replaced it with the iPhone 14 Plus. It's identical to the iPhone 14 in every way except for size and battery life. The latter is where it really shines. I routinely had to charge the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro at the end of a busy day, but the iPhone 14 Plus often had enough juice to last until the afternoon of the second day off the charger. It even bested the iPhone 14 Pro Max in my testing. If you're frequently turning on Low Power Mode, this is the iPhone to buy.
These devices differ only in size and battery life. The iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted a little more than a day, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro will need to be recharged by bedtime (with heavy use). The Pro models add a 120-Hz screen refresh rate, which makes all interactions look and feel more responsive, the screens can get brighter, and they're made of stainless steel instead of aluminum, so they're a smidge more durable. The triple-camera system is now led by a 48-megapixel primary camera, which can also capture 2X zoom photos in pretty great quality, effectively giving you four zoom levels with the ultrawide and telephoto. We haven't seen a huge difference in our photo tests compared to the iPhone 13 Pro, so don't expect a major upgrade here.
If you don't need the latest iPhone and you don't want to buy used, then Apple has a few other good choices: the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12. Both are perfectly fine options at those prices, though you can probably find them for even cheaper (and in good condition) at sites like Swappa and eBay. Both feature MagSafe support, physical SIM trays, dual-camera systems with Night mode, and wireless charging. The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro, XS, XR, X, 8, 7, 6S, SE (2016), and every older iPhone that came before them are probably available somewhere, but you shouldn't take the bait. They don't have the processing power to keep up with the latest software, and even if they do, they will have a much shorter software shelf life. The iPhone 6S, iPhone SE 2016, and iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are cut off from receiving the iOS 16 update. Without software support, your device will slowly become less secure and could become a slow, buggy mess. The camera tech in these models isn't as refined, either. Unless they're almost free, we think you're better off with the new iPhone SE or another model on this list.
For most people, I'd almost always recommend buying the 64GB model if you can afford it. For only $100 more, you're getting four times the storage capacity, and who doesn't value that? However, if you want the most bang for your buck where storage is concerned and money is no object, the 128GB model is the best deal on a per GB basis.
iCloud integrates seamlessly into iOS and OS X which means that there are no third party apps to download in order to access your stuff. You can then free up lots of storage space on your iPhone and still know that those photos, videos, and files are accessible via iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive from anywhere.
Then you have to consider other types of media such as movies and music. iTunes movies can be 1 to 3GB in size for SD depending on the length. If you prefer watching HD, they can easily eat up 3 to 6GB in storage. TV shows can be a quarter to half the size of movies, but more than make up for it by the number of episodes typically available. If you get your movies and TV shows from somewhere other than iTunes, you're still looking at about 400MB an hour for SD and over 1GB (sometimes way over) an hour for HD. Music files are generally quite small but can add up as well, especially if you have lots and lots of albums you want to keep with you everywhere. Even with something like iTunes Match or a similar streaming service, you need local storage for offline playback. Again, it all adds up. 041b061a72
